Are you thinking about financing your new home?

When buying a home, applying for the mortgage loan is distressing for a lot of people, but it doesn't have to be. I've got great connections to various lenders all over San Diego County and they've helped me realize some things that make the process of applying for a loan uncomplicated.

1 – Create a list of questions about your loan program

If you find that you don't completely realize the pros and cons of the various loan programs, be sure you bring a list of questions. I or one of my lender contacts can assist you with understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both programs, because it is a challenge to know the characteristics of both fixed and adjustable rate mortgages.

2 – Decide when you want to lock

Locking in the interest rate designates that the mortgage lender commits to the mortgage interest rates for the loan – commonly at the time the loan application is presented. By floating the rate, you can lock the rate anytime between the loan application day and the issuing of closing documents. Those who prefer to float think that interest rates will plunge in the near future. Click here to see the outlook for the next 90 days of interest rates.

3 – Determine if you want to pay additional points to reduce your interest rate

Generally you can opt to pay additional points to lower the interest rate of your mortgage loan. Each point is 1 percent of the mortgage loan and is payable in cash at closing. If you're uncertain if buying points is the best option for you, click here to use our points calculator.

4 – Gather your paperwork

Getting a loan requires a lot of paperwork, so you should take some time to get your documents together. Click here to get a feel for typical questions you'll have to answer on a loan app.
